Magnum XL-200 30th Anniversary Celebration

So this one is super special to me. My family has been going to Cedar Point since we were kids. Magnum XL-200 was my fist big roller coaster, and to this day it is still my mom’s favorite ride. She is unable to ride it now due to health reasons so it holds a special place in my heart. 2019 was the ride’s 30th anniversary (It is basically the same age as I am) and all I wanted when I visited Cedar Point that year was a hoodie commemorating the occasion. My problem? They had NO anniversary merchandise!

I had a design mission: I HAD to have a Magnum Anniversary hoodie… but what did I want it to look like? Here is my initial sketch. I knew I wanted the logo in it and I wanted to emphasize the fact that it was now 30 years old.

This is another concept I entertained….maybe I wanted it to have more of a classy look? At this point I wasn’t sure.

No….not a classic look. I needed to stick with the late 80’s timeline Magnum is rooted in. I wanted to use at least part of the logo and possibly entertain a font similar to the secondary logo on its ride entrance sign. (An 80’s style font with a line through it.) I also wanted to include the retro trains to give more depth. This was my final “sketch” before I started putting it together.

I am very happy with how this project turned out. I drew the basic logo myself and omitted some of its finer details to not detract from the roller coaster behind it. My 80’s line font fits in perfectly with a retro faded color palette and I really enjoyed adding the vintage lines and aging to it. I think the final product fits all of my goals.
